Brilliant late 60’s UK soul mod freakbeat prog psych – and I know that’s a mouthful but in this case, it’s fitting – by the Rainbows, “New Day Dawning” b/w “Days & Nights” on the CBS label. Check out the Impassioned, dramatic prog psych vocals over a dramatic, ominous chunky British Rubble rhythm. Then all of a sudden the clouds lift and we’re thrown into this falsetto mod soul chorus, like a late Small Faces ballad (“Afterglow”) sung by Paul Weller in the Jam’s final year or the Style Council’s first. Then we come down again with a little Procol Harum organ flourish, some proto-prog synth squiggles, and less-than-cheery lines like “Soon there will be darkness, and the new day will be over.” These guys had more mood swings than Sean Young. Flipside “Days and Nights” treads similar ground, fusing more soulful Small Faces mod sounds on the verses and chorus with trippy, ethereal psychedelia during the breaks. But such is the benefit of releasing your single in 1969 – you can draw on all that went before all the styles that came before you. And the Rainbows do.
