Eugenia BURZIO (20 June 1872, Poirino near Torino - 18 May 1922, Milan)

Was an Italian operatic soprano known for her vibrant voice and passionate style of singing. She was particularly prominent in the verismo repertoire and created the role of Delia Terzaghi in Leoncavallo's Goffredo Mameli as well as singing Minnie in the Italian premiere of Puccini's La fanciulla del West. While many music critics found her interpretations imaginative and exciting, others criticized her for unevenness and over-emphasis in the vocal lines.Burzio began her music career as a violinist in her early twenties but ultimately decided to pursue an opera career. She studied singing at the Milan Conservatory with Carolina Ferni and made her professional début as Santuzza in Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana at the Teatro Regio di Torino in 1899. She went on to have a highly successful career and was for many years one of the leading dramatic sopranos in Italy. She became particularly associated with the music of the new verismo school. She was a regular performer at La Scala during the first two decades of the twentieth century where her roles included Gluck’s Armide and Bellini’s Norma among many others. In addition to appearing in operas throughout Italy, Burzio also appeared in several productions in South America and in St Petersburg. Towards the end of her career Burzio suffered from nerves and ill-health. She made her final appearance in 1919 in Ponchielli’s Marion Delorme.

Shipping cost increase a lot. As you know, I’m first of all a collector, so I’m sensible about this problem. So, from now, for those bidders who wins only one record, I offer to hold the record for future winning auctions.

Bidder will pay only the record.

E + + A near mint copy.

E + A choice copy no wear whatsoever.

E Excellent. Virtually no trace of groove wear with only minimal traces of use and handling.

E – An above average record .

E = Record with slight degree if groove wear, but not enough to seriously detract from its audio quality.

V + + Obviously well played but still enjoyable. Noticeable greying in the grooves

V + Very well worn but listenable Expect the surface noise to be significant. There may be stressed grooves.

V Stressed grooves more pronounced.

As you know I’m a collector and on Ebay I try to list records that I could be satisfied if I was the buyer.

I try to be conservative on grading and list some important and also unknown Italian singers.

On Nov-24-10 at 07:43:40 PST, seller added the following information:

These are PATHE RECORDINGS.

DISCO PARADISO was a special label issued in ITALY ONLY for PATHE and ONLY FOR 14" and for those recordings issued as Pathe Etched Label of 86000 serie.

In fact these two arias of Norma was issued as 86382 and 86383 as Pathe Etched Label.

All I know it's that they are very rare in Italy too.

The first number of the catalogue of DISCO PARADISO was for Eurgenia Burzio. In fact the numbers 1 to 8 are her recordings.

I see (because I have them on my own collection) also DISCO PARADISO of :

- GIUSEPPINA BALDASSARE TEDESCHI

- AMEDEO BASSI

- ARISTODEMO GIORGINI

 - MARIO SAMMARCO

- GAETANO TOMMASINI

IF YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING BOOK (THAT WAS A MUST FOR EVERY ITALIAN COLLECTORS OF THE '960s AS ROBERTO BAUER - HISTORICAL RECORDS 1898-1908) YOU CAN SEE THAT THESE RECORDS ARE REPORTED FOR BURZIO AND BASSI
