Description

I have up for auction a rare Pre-1900s record (One Sided 7" 78") on a E. Berliner's GRAMOPHONE label. It has patents from 1887 through 1895. It is by J. Jefferson, I believe (signature is etched into label, so hard to read exactly). Jefferson was an Actor born in 1829 and performed during the mid to later 1800s. His main claim to fame was Rip Van Winkle. This record is #699 and label says Jan.4 1898 and title is "Rip Van Winkle: The Reverie"; a dramatic reading by Jefferson. Record looks to have a lot of wear but no chip or cracks and no deep scratches. Plays with much surface noise, but to be expected with the very old Berliners. It may have a skip-back midway through (perhaps dependent on weight of needle/arm used. I think the original ones were played with a very heavy arm/needle. I am not really sure what to start as opening bid, as it may be quite valuable, but I will start at a fairly low price.
