THE BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS

b/w  ALL FOR THE LOVE OF A GIRL

John LaGale Horton (April 30, 1925 – November 5, 1960) was an American country, honky-tonk and rockabilly musician during the 1950s. He is best known for a series of history-inspired narrative country saga songs that became international hits. His 1959 single "The Battle of New Orleans" was awarded the 1960 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording. The song was awarded the Grammy Hall of Fame Award and in 2001 ranked No. 333 of the Recording Industry Association of America's "Songs of the Century"

"The Battle of New Orleans" is a song written by Jimmy Driftwood in 1936. The song describes the Battle of New Orleans from the perspective of an American soldier; the song tells the tale of the battle with a light tone and provides a rather comical version of what actually happened at the battle. Johnny Horton's version got to Number 16 in the UK singles chart and would have done even better if it had not also been covered by Lonnie Donegan who's version got to number 2 in the UK charts.
