Description
One of the famous and most collectible jazz albums of the era by one of the great musicians, this rare first UK pressing of the Thelonious Monk album Monk’s Moods is in a very presentable condition and it plays well, too.
What’s interesting about this record is that this Esquire issue was pressed using the same stamper as the original Prestige. The matrix in the dead wax displays the previous Prestige numbers - one handwritten and crossed through, and another in machine-stamped lettering. Nowhere on the runout does the Esquire number appear. Essentially, this pressing is literally from the same mould. London Jazz Collector proclaims this direct link to the original Prestige pressing: “All-American original mother and stampers as the source of the UK pressing.”

This issue was the first pressing of the album to be released in the UK, in 1961. Monk fronts three different trios with Gary Mapp, Art Blakey, Percy Heath and Max Roach.
The vinyl and sleeve have undergone a gentle yet effective clean, and this has noticeably improved the sound of the vinyl. The record still has some very light audible background noise but plays well. The audible wear is actually very subtle, to the extent that I pondered giving it a higher grading. The sleeve is intact with sound gum but with some minor creasing and wear as pictured. Holding it up to the light, the sheen is largely flat and smooth, with very little creasing. The card feels fairly firm. On the reverse, there is some wear but it’s in very good shape for a record that’s 59 years old.
Part of my jazz record collection for around 15 years, this record has been stored upright with other records away from heat and sunlight. It hasn’t had very many plays because it didn’t become a firm favourite, yet as a collector I hung on to it. Right now my collection has become ludicrous and my finances have suffered this year, so it’s time to move on the records that I play least.

By economy courier, I can send all together for (TBC) in the region of a fiver where possible. Combining lots of items into one consignment works out a lot cheaper than Royal Mail.
