RARE original 1967 first pressing in great collectible condition ...true American "underground" presented in bent edged beatnik garage-rock glory...

Like similar groundbreaking albums in 1966/1967, Indian War Whoop seemed like it came out of nowhere.

It's hard to classify a band whose musical abilities reach beyond the normal circumscription of more conventional, orthodox music. The Holy Modal Rounders principally fall into this category because of their strange approach to their music. A very obscure band, the Holy Modal Rounders, obvious users of lysergic acid, fall into the bag of a tripped out "Fugs" gone berzerk. Surely enough, the band's music is some of the most cryptic, arcane music to ever come out of the psychedelic movement of the mid-to-late sixties. Combining as much psychedelic garage with traditional folk, the Holy Modal Rounders are, in addition to being an enjoyable listen, are one of the few groups of musicians where even drugs may the awareness of their music. Being void of nearly all conventional songwriting rules, the band's 1967 release "Indian War Whoop" is an eccentric record that sprawled a half hour of idiosyncratic, dissonant music that can be defined as a turned on drug infested hippies doing their thing...

"Indian War Whoop" constituted a tribal crossover between a dervish shakes & grooves and a saloon epileptic fit, and "Sweet Apple Cider" a drunk helium serenade. The demented heretic tone of the jug-band wacked-out-blues "Cocaine Blues" actually hided a heartfelt melody and, similarly, the gypsy serenade "Sky Divers" camouflaged a musique-concrete barrage of electric violin and manic recitation before it veered in a more elegant traditional rural-ballad direction; but it wasn't over yet; a final twist transformed the song to a chamber-cabaret crossover. Exquisite!

"The Second-Hand Watch" went into full-blown psychedelic echo-delay dome mode, paving the way for "Radar Blues", a colossal masterpiece - a country ballad carried by a gust of wind in a stream of molten deformed vocal-harmonies, forming various shapes along the way, from birds of prey, to enchanting sirens, to traditional dirge choral-parts, to lysergic chaos and so on. This experimental vocal-troupe vein continued in "Football Blues", but adorned with a cartoonish element of fury. This wonderful musical of the bizarre ends with the bittersweet harmonies of "Morning Glory", showing some structure beneath the chaos...
