PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Rare and highly collectible 1970 ESP release of Charles Manson and his "Family" recorded from 1967 through 1969 ... IF these recordings were by an unknown folk psych crew they'd be viewed in a totally different light instead of the rag tag hippie outlaws that they were, and, worthy of high praise in collector circles when talking lo-fi lost highway folk psych drifters of the ilk.
In 1968, one Phil Kaufman, who had met Manson and then moved in briefly with his "Family". Kaufman continually urged Manson to record some of his (Manson's) songs.
While Manson was being held on the Tate-LaBianca charges, he told Kaufman "please put out my music." According to Kaufman, Manson phoned him five days a week, even though he was allowed only three phone calls per day. Manson was "very anxious for his music to be heard."
Kaufman raised $3000 and pressed 2000 copies of the album entitled Lie: The Love & Terror Cult. Consisting of recordings made from 1967 to 1969, the album contains thirteen songs. These included "Cease to Exist", a song the Beach Boys had recorded in modified form as "Never Learn Not to Love". The album was released March 6, 1970, Kaufman had signed an agreement with New York-based ESP Records to distribute the album nationally.
Manson sings in vaguely Eastern melodies, strumming his guitar irregularly and injecting psychedelic sound effects and voices together into trippy collages. “Ego” is a cautionary tale that oddly warns its listeners against the dangers of isolation and the negative power of the personal. Over a shuffle whose raggedy timing vaguely recalls the Velvet Underground, Manson advises his listeners against breaking the law in “Don’t Do Anything Illegal”—not because it’s wrong, but because you’ll be harassed.
After all, how could a psychotic bastard with a taste for free love and lysergic acid who would mastermind a gory massacre ever make a good record?? Then we came to our senses and wondered how they could possibly fail. The fact of the matter is that "Lie" is a good record - possibly even a great one. But then we have a taste for slightly eccentric lo-fi albums that wander around aimlessly exploring different approaches to writing whilst constantly showing signs of some innate if admittedly feral talent.
The albums opener Look At Your Game Girl is basically a great tune from Manson dives right into brooding psychedelia, that follows along other highlights like; Ego, Look At Your Game Girl, Home Is Where Your're Happy, and Mechanical Man which if filled with lo-fi affects amid quirky acid soaked lyrics. Another fave is Never Say Never To Always, with the Family girls singing a haunting melody with charming harmonies ...
