1970 ORIGINAL SPACEROCK BOOGIE COLLECTIBLE !!
UFO
1
\ USA - Rare Earth - RS 524
Rare and sought 1970 first pressing of the legendary first UFO album...not near the hardrock band they came to be, but more of an acidrock underground psych-boogie sound with fuzzed leads in outer-space...
Signed to Beacon Records in March of 1970, the first UFO studio album appeared seven months later. The low-budget recording, simply titled UFO 1 is a loose jamming, space rock recording that goes heavy on fuzz, blues, boogie, distortion and psychedelic influences and has several challenging sonic moments. The raw mixes and underground hardrock feel are full of charm and reflection to the freakbeat head scene in London's late sixties. In their earliest formation, the British band made a much more experimental grind that reflected psychedelic as well as R&B influences pitched with a dark resonance. This swirling mish-mosh barely suggests the early British metal of the group's commercial pinnacle that was still years off when they released their eponymous debut. Blue Cheer, early Black Sabbath, and maybe a little bit of the Who (mostly derived via bassist Pete Way's meandering, over-saturated basslines) all come to mind on standouts like "Boogie," "C'mon Everybody," and "Follow You Home." While ignored completely in the States as well as their British home, U F O was a bit of an international hit. "C'mon Everybody" made it to the top of the charts in Japan, which led to a tour of the country and enough career momentum to keep the records coming while the sound of (and worldwide market for) heavy rock scene slowly took shape. While being the best offering (along with their standout 2nd LP) from Pete Way, Phil Mogg, and company, U F O ~ '1' is a nice psych/spacerock boogie study that reveals how the blues/psychedelic scene slowly morphed into the heavy metal sound some 10 years later...
