Please keep in mind, we would prefer to continue to provide you the opportunity to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our well over +22,000 positive feedback. We use an ultrasonic KLAudio machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. IKARUS were more in tune with the British underground prog scene than say with Can, Amon Duul II or other early bands like Xhol Caravan. Instead of long atmospheric nosedives into the world of psychedelic freakery, IKARUS was more about tight-knit jamming interplay that crafted classically composed blues rock sounds into sprawling progressive behemoths with comlex drumming and woodwind sections to conspire in creating one of the most eclectic sounding albums of Germany’s early progressive rock scene. This self titled first and only album contained a mere four tracks but each stood apart from the other and at times makes you question if it’s really the same band from beginning to end which showcases the eclectic musical mastery of IKARUS and its inclusion of highly trained musicians who finally had the chance to leave behind the simplicity of 60s rock and show their true talents with their own exquisitely designed custom compositions.
Like many bands of the early 70s timeline, IKARUS had one foot firmly planted in late 60s psychedelic rock and heavy psych with newer 70s elements of hard rock, free-wheelin' fusion and heavenly symphonic prog that was emerging in the UK.
The opener “Eclipse” takes command for over 15 minutes, subdivided into the suites; “Skyscapers” takes on a heavy bluesy rock guitar riffing and domineering organ, flute, ballsy bass and energetic drumming bombast; veering off into early Led Zeppelin characteristics in the guitar department and the track takes a roller coaster ride through various movements that include acoustic guitar and heavier rock alternating and erupts with a killer freaked out organ solo in the middle. “Mesentery” is a huge improvement and displays a connection between the English band Marsupilami with energetic zigzagging complexities in compositional ability along with organ and Mellotron sounds that gets the band compared to Van Der Graaf Generator but they don't get into musical sophistication despite being more disciplined than most Krautrock bands still finding their way into sprawling jams including unique psychedelic injections by guitar slides, angular drumming patterns akin to the weirdness heard on Zeppelin’s extended “Whole Lotta Love.” Next up “The Raven” which finds a much more upbeat jazzy swing tones with alternating grooves resembling the jazzy side of psychedelicrok found in The Doors mixed with Santana type of percussive business and a stealthy workout of progressive time signatures via choppy bass and guitar riffs. This second track to exceed the 10 minute mark begins on a lighter upbeat mode before turning into a dark frightening otherworldly mix of Kraut-termed "kosmische" heavy acid organ driven outbursts. Based on the Edgar Allan Poe poem. Some of the compositional structures are super'out-there'
The finale “Early Bell’s Voice” led by a classical themed piano roll before organ and Mellotron sounds follow joining in. The track moves on displaying amazing passage interplay that bring works by Catapilla to mind.
- IKARUS was one of those bands that packed a whole career of ideas into a single album and then moved on. With driving blues rock, psychedelic organ and jazz fueled sax and drumming attacks, IKARUS was on a whole other level as far as complex musicianship was concerned and as a result this album needs multiple interesting listens to grasp the ongoings. Definitely one of the most unique pioneering Krautrock experiences in the world of progressive rock.
