Original T.M.O.Q. master plates were used for this early '70s West Coast pressing that remains rare and collectible ... previously unreleased versions of a soundboard recording back when the mighty Deep Purple had just broken into the American tour market, on the rise to super-stardom, though, at this point, the band was hungry, full on attempt to impress concert goers which, by listening to this performance - they do.
When this "Purple For A Day" (Long Beach '71)" LP was recorded, Deep Purple was only the opening act for headliners Rod Stewart and the Faces. They did not have the luxury of unlimited time. The album clocks in at a little over 45 minutes. Due to this time constraint, along with the additional months of touring, of the two albums, “Long Beach 1971" is tighter and more concise. There are no wasted notes. At the time of this recording, Deep Purple was in the United States, before a big audience, and this was their opportunity to make an impression. It is easy to look back now, but at that point in the band’s history, every performance had to be do or die ....The concert features the Mk II lineup of the band – Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice.
The first thing that will strike most people is the track listing – just 4 songs. Generally four songs would be an EP, and certainly wouldn’t be enough for a live album, but this was recorded at a time when Deep Purple liked to jam with extend songs rather than just playing the album versions. As a result the shortest song here is 11 minutes long, and the longest is twice as long -- so those four songs add up to 45 minutes easily.
At the time of this concert the band had released their magnum opus LP “In Rock” – a pivotal moment in their history as it moved them away from the 60s feel psychadelic rock and turned them into a killer hard rock band. It is no surprise that of the four songs performed on this album, from the "In Rock" album is the crazed driver “Speed King”.
The first song comes as a bit of a shock at first – it doesn’t sound like a band kicking off a concert – it’s more like a band well into the set, but what a great start to a show. “Ring That Neck” includes a Gillan-Blackmore guitar vs vocals duel with Gillan’s high vocals matching the guitar parts from Blackmore before a long scream signified an end to the song. As the band move into “Hard Road”, it’s Jon Lord the Hammond organ that is the center of the sound along with Ian Gillan on vocals, but as the song progresses then Ritchie Blackmore’s superb guitar work competes for attention. The album ends with a massive version of "Mandrake Root" which gives all the band members time to shine.
