Description
I found this gem in a crate at a local record convention about 10 years ago. Since I didn’t (and still don’t) own a regular copy of this title, I’ve played it once or twice. But I felt guilty doing it ‘cause it’s a more important record than that. I’d guess there aren’t more than a dozen of these in existence.
This 12” diameter, 33 1/3 rpm, long-playing vinyl record is Tom Waits “Rain Dogs” ©1985, stereo. Pressed by Specialty Records for Island as their catalog #90299, that number appears on the cover slick and record label. Specialty’s #STIL-855765/STIL-855766 is recorded on the label and etched in the dead wax along with “Masterdisk 1-1”. The track listing/times appear to be the same as the subsequent commercial release.
It is furnished in a generic white jacket on which some helpful soul has written “Tom Waites” at upper right. The slick I refer to is a photocopy of a sheet called “Island Records Inc. LP Label Copy”. It lists pertinent data such as release date, song titles, timing, credits and information about the correct outer jacket and inner sleeve that will ultimately be used.
The record’s playing surfaces shine like brand new. There are, upon close examination, a handful of fingernail or paper-type scuffs. Not the sort of mark that will cause a problem when playing - just not totally pristine to the eye. It easily played near mint for me. Good luck and thank you to everyone who bids.
