WIRED, ISKRA 1903, NEW PHONIC ART: Free Improvisation (Deutsche Grammophon [Germany] 2740 105) 1974
Grab this while you can!! Here’s a near perfect copy of this very rare and legendary 3 LP box set which hardly ever turns up. Each of the 3 groups gets a full LP to itself: New Phonic Art (Vinko Globokar, Michel Portal, Carlos Roque Alsina, Jean-Pierre Drouet); Iskra 1903 (Derek Bailey, Barry Guy, Paul Rutherford); and Wired (Conny Plank, Michael Ranta, Mike Lewis, Karl-Heinz Boettner). Most notable IMHO for the contribution by Wired, which is reminiscent of dark, spooky cosmic “Zeit”-era Tangerine Dream or early Cluster. The other 2 groups are more in an avant free-jazz improv mode ala Derek Bailey (not surprising, since he’s in Iskra 1903). Essential for fans of Musica Elettronica Viva, Gruppo Improvisacione Nuova Consonanza, John Cage, David Tudor, Pierre Henry, musique concrete, Pierre Schaeffer, Henri Chopin, Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, Harry Partch, Ragnar Grippe, Arne Nordheim, Alvin Lucier, Alvin Curran, Parmegiani, Stockhausen, Xenakis, Richard Maxfield, Tod Dockstader, Luc Ferrari, Christian Clozier, Nurse with wound, Asmus Tietchens, Zoviet France, Hafler Trio, John Duncan, Merzbow, Organum, AMM, LAFMS, Jim O’Rourke, Sonic Youth, etc. Includes booklet.
