Offered here are 3 RCA Victor 'Sample Records' from 1937 with excerpts from the soundtrack of Disney's animated movie classic SNOW WHITE. These are very rare and provide an intimate peek into the preparations for the release of this iconic movie. They are blank on the back side and were trimmed to 10.5 inches instead of the standard 10 inches. This larger size exposes the information scratched into the record 'dies' in the form of a hand inscribed description of the song title and record number. These inscriptions are partially visible outside the normal run-in groove at the edge of the records.

These are test pressings used to select which 'take' to issue and would have been used 'in house' by Victor to see how clean the beginning and ending of the cuttings were from the soundtrack dub, as well as for sound quality and a "wear test". These are 10.5" records, which includes the "run-in" areas with their pressed data, suggesting they were special "direct from the matrices" discs, not intended for any kind of wider distribution. In addition, the blank reverses suggest these were one-off items for internal use only.

These 3 tracks were included in a Victor 3 record album set of 78 rpm records, issued early in 1938 to coincide with the official release of SNOW WHITE. However, the matrix numbers imply these were recorded between 11/26/37 and 12/17/37, before the movies official release on February, 4, 1938, even before the Los Angeles premier on December 21, 1937. Disney was a marketing genius.

These are from the estate collection of a long time 78 rpm record collector who had some real spectacular rarities connected with the entertainment industry of this period. I have no idea how he managed to acquire these rare bits of history, but you can bet they have not been offered to the general public until now. These could rightfully be considered museum pieces!
