Ludwig van Beethoven – The Five Piano Concertos Claudio Arrau, Piano Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam / Bernard Haitink Philips – 835 281/85 AY | 5 LP Stereo Box Set | Netherlands, 1964
An extraordinary early Philips presentation of Beethoven’s complete five piano concertos, performed by the legendary Claudio Arrau with the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam under Bernard Haitink.
This is the magnificent original five-record presentation in the remarkable period box with its elegant teak-style wooden back and gold lettering.
The set also contains both original full-size, 24-page booklets — a beautifully produced example of 1960s Philips design, typography and classical record presentation.

Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15 Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 19 Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37 Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58 Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73 “Emperor”
Recorded in Amsterdam during 1964.
Vinyl: NM (Near Mint)
All five records and all ten sides are in truly exceptional Near Mint condition.
The vinyl is beautifully clean, deeply glossy and remarkably fresh throughout, with no significant marks or obvious signs of actual use. This is the kind of preservation normally associated with a carefully maintained private archive.
The complete set appears barely played and presents exceptionally well under direct light.
A professional archival cleaning may improve the already immaculate appearance even further, but the records are conservatively graded Near Mint rather than Mint.
Two Original 24-Page Booklets: NM++
Both original full-size booklets are complete, crisp and astonishingly fresh.
The paper remains beautifully clean and still retains a subtle fresh-print scent. Pages, printing and binding are exceptionally well preserved, without the tired appearance normally found in booklets of this age.
The first booklet contains the programme, information on the soloist and conductor, essays on Beethoven’s piano concertos and contemporary assessments of Beethoven, presented in German and French.
The second booklet, Das Leben Beethovens im Spiegel seiner Epoche, places Beethoven’s life within the historical and cultural background of his era.
These are not merely inserts but genuine examples of high-quality Philips paper design and printing — beautifully produced and preserved pieces of 1960s record-book art.

Outer Box: Strong VG++
The original large presentation box is clean, solid and structurally excellent.
The exterior shows only light age-related storage wear and minor rubbing. Most importantly, the unusual teak-style wooden back remains exceptionally beautiful, clean and elegant, with the gold lettering strongly preserved.
The box has a substantial, luxurious appearance and represents one of the most attractive Philips classical box designs of its period.
