  • Item: 60’s garage punk rock indie label 45 RPM record ca. 1965-67 (maybe from ’65 but songs copyrighted in ’67) – Sad And Blue (Sad & Blue) / Love You by The Four Rogues (The Rogues) on Philtown PH 101 / 102. Three of The Four Rogues were Keith Palidar (1947-91), Joe Pfeifer (later a member of psych band Adam and then the band Country Funk) and Don Bakes (also became a member of Adam, whose song “Melrose Street 5829” is notable). The 45 record up for sale here is extremely rare. The guys were from the Philly / New Jersey area as was the young producer of the record, David Chackler (who became a major music figure in launching the Stevie Nicks / Lindsey Buckingham incarnation of Fleetwood Mac, Queen with Freddie Mercury, 2 Live Crew, etc.). Chackler owned this Philtown label, and also Dater Records (“She Said So” by The Conductors on Dater is a sought after garage record as well). If you’re curious as to what “Sad And Blue” sounds like, and you’re not a buyer here, you can hear it on the CD “Quagmire 5 – More Suave Punk From The Sizzling 60’s Scene” (2005). I listened to both sides of this record on my sturdy ‘flea market find’ 60’s GE record player (!), and there are no skips or repeats – it played through great and I really enjoyed it. I felt like “Sad And Blue” should have been a California scene song as I was listening to it (not yet knowing that two of the Rogues did in fact become a part of that scene shortly after this record was made). The guys are singing and it’s definitely garage rock, with ups and downs and constant guitar with a great beat. It’s a loud sound, but not like punk from the late 70’s – more like early psych to my ear. The flip side was more midtempo, with a big guitar sound but more traditional or early 60’s sounding. Luckily, Joe Pfeifer and Don Bakes have remained active in music through the years, so you can see them on you-tube and read about things on the Country Funk site, although all of this info has been extremely hard for me to figure out – neither Joe or Don have posted any info on the net specifically referring to “The Four Rogues” (they just say that they’re the last two Rogues left). The way that I identified things initially was internet searching and using the songwriting credits, finally finding their names in 60’s copyright entries and taking it from there. I feel like “Sad And Blue” is such a great garage rock song – any high end garage rock record collection is missing an important record if it doesn’t include this gem. Record will be carefully/responsibly packed. Please see my listings for other desirable titles!


  • Returns: If an item is deemed “not as described” due to such circumstances as shipping damage or seller’s incorrect description of the item’s condition, it falls under the realm of the eBay Money Back Guarantee. The reason why I don’t have a return policy in addition to the eBay Money Back Guarantee is that return policies cover all other reasons for return (such as the buyer simply changing their mind) but they also require the seller to pay for shipping, which is an expense that I cannot afford, especially in the case of an international transaction.


  • International Shipping: I sympathize with int’l buyers regarding shipping charges and their country’s Customs fees, but because the value must be declared in order to insure the item for that amount, I’m unable to satisfy the expectations of most buyers in certain countries. If you’re an exception, all you need to do is let me know and hopefully we can work together!


  • Condition: Records may not function as intended per surface noise, defective playback due to manufacturing defect or scratches, etc. and any extant sleeves/covers often have damage such as flawed edges and odors which may require repair or treatment, so I’m selling the item as being in “For parts or not working” condition. Most records are in scratched condition. See Goldmine Record Album Price Guide, 5th Edition, page 17: “It’s estimated that no more than 2 to 4 percent of all records remaining from the 1950’s and 1960s are truly Near Mint” (and the next grade down from Near Mint is VG+, where light scratches are present). It amazes me that the world of record collecting doesn’t have an official grading company such as in the comic book field (they have CGC), the coin collecting realm (they have PCGS), etc. Until an official 3rd party industry expert comes along, record grading remains subjective and opinions vary due to parties’ differences in audio equipment, etc.
