DAVID BOWIE CHANNELING THE STONES! Back in 1973 Bowie had cemented his reputation as a superstar. He was touring with The Spiders from Mars and writing his follow up to the immensely successful Ziggy Stardust while on the road. He told NME that with "The Jean Genie" he "wanted to get the same sound the Stones had on their very first album on the harmonica." The result was timeless, blues heavy and slightly askew from the glam rock Bowie had cultivated with Ziggy Stardust. Included on the b-side is the recently recovered BBC Top Of The Pops performance of "The Jean Genie" from January 1973. Both cuts have been faithfully remastered by original Trident engineer Ray Staff. Limited edition 7" picture disc.
EMI has marked the 40th anniversary of The Jean Genie as the third in a series of collectable 7" picture discs. Following the "Starman 45" issued in April and the "John, I'm Only Dancing" disc released earlier in October, The Jean Genie was issued in November 2012. The Jean Genie was first released in the UK on November 14, 1972. This anniversary disc features the original version on the A-side and the audio from the recently recovered BBC Top Of The Pops performance of The Jean Genie from January 1973 on the AA-side. Both tracks are 2012 remasters by original Trident engineer Ray Staff. The images chosen to illustrate each version are of the period, with the A-side utilizing a Mick Rock photo of David and his friend, the late Cyrinda Foxe, in San Francisco in October 1972. The AA-side has a still from the aforementioned TOTPs performance.
