THE AMERICAN STANDARD
RARE 1969 PRIVATE LABEL 2 LP PSYCH / FREE JAZZ / POETRY RECORD
This very unusual album is called The American Standard and it was produced in the late sixties or early seventies by a group of student artists at the college of Staten Island in Staten Island, New York.
This is a truly obscure record that I have never come across before. There are all sorts of great avant garde free jazz sounds on one tune including some great reeds, flute, guitar, synth, bass clarinet, drums, voices etc. Some of this sounds like it could of made a great ESP Disc release!
Other peices include folk rock, electric blues and deep reverb odd spoken word, radical protest poetry pieces. There are even some audio collage "found sounds" used including part of Foxy Lady by Jimi Hendrix. This odd record is a sound potpouri of the late sixties counter culture.
In the notes inside the gatefold sleeve the musicians thank Sun Ra, BB King, Studs Terkel, Sonny Boy Williamson, Armond Schwerner, The SICC, Roland Kirk and others.
It is amazing to consider that students at a college in such a conservative place like Staten Island were this free and open in their thinking at the time. It is also quite alarming and sad to think of what has happened to so much of our culture today.
The vinyl is in VG++ condition and the gatefold sleeve is in VG condition with some ring wear. This rarity would make a great addition to any collection.
