Description
A rare 7" recording of the Russo-German pianist Arthur Friedheim (1859 - 1932) playing an abridged version of Liszt's famous Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. Friedheim was one of the most famous pupils of Liszt but unfortunately did not make many recordings during his lifetime. This was recorded for the Emerson Company in 1916. Emerson records sold quite poorly and not many of them turns up in this condition, regardless of its genre.
Emerson records were cut in "universal cut" - a groove cut in 45 degrees angle which allowed their records could be played either on the conventional lateral machines (Victor, Columbia, etc.) or the less common vertical machines (Pathe, Operaphone, etc.). In order to play them properly on modern equipment with modern turntables, one needs to play them with the left channel only on a stereo-cartridges.
The record is generally in excellent condition; although it has some minor surface rubbing - largely because it was kept without sleeve for a long time - it does not affect its playing.
