THE BEATLES: Nov. 4, 1963 COMMAND PERFORMANCE
FROM ME TO YOU/SHE LOVES YOU/TILL THERE WAS YOU/TWIST AND SHOUT (Deccagone PROMO EP #1108 on GOLD vinyl w/PICTURE SLEEVE): Clean M- record and sleeve.
When Deccagone issued bootleg 45s of the famous January 1, 1962 Decca sessions, they added another, later recording: 4 live songs from The Beatles' command performance in November, 1963. This EP is especially interesting because it was recorded as Beatlemania swept the UK (McCartney introduces She Loves You as "a new one"; the release of this single touched off hysteria across The Isles). It also includes John Lennon's famous introduction of Twist And Shout, a matter of some concern to manager Brian Epstein.
Brian had cautioned John, who was notoriously anti-Royal, not to say anything obscene or disrespectful at the show, but he was afraid that Lennon would ignore his wise counsel and embarrass the Royal Family. As John's turn to intro the song drew near, Epstein broke out in a sweat. He'd warned John that this was no small matter; saying the wrong thing could ruin their careers. He was enormously relieved when John said,
"On this next one, those of you in the cheap seats can clap your hands. The rest of you just rattle your jewelry."
Not only did John keep his head; his clever aside was considered proof that The Boys weren't a bunch of rock and roll morons. And here's John's famed comment, preserved only on this rare EP.
(By the way, the photo on the sleeve showing Lizzie shaking hands with a humble Ringo wasn't from that night; Her Majesty didn't attend the show).
