Description
US BROADSIDE BR-301 1963, ORIGINAL FIRST PRESSING MONO LP
Bob Dylan appears on this various artists collection under the pseudonym Blind Boy Grunt, singing "John Brown," "Only A Hobo," and "Talkin' Devil." The album also features Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs, Peter LaFarge, Happy Traum, and others.
An amazing artifact of the early 1960s. The 1st press is on the Broadside label (in cooperation with Folkways) housed in a super thick sleeve with two compartments inside separated by a cardboard sheet. It comes with a large 8 page booklet full of notes and music describing each track. The tracks include an early recording of Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind" by The New World Singers; Pete Seeger's "Ballad of Old Monroe"; Bob Dylan singing "John Brown" (listed as "Jon Brown" on the jacket) billed as Blind Boy Grunt; Peter LaFarge "As Long as the Grass Shall Grow" "Fabus' Follies" ; Phil Ochs "William Worthy"; Gil Turner "Benny Kid Paret"; Happy Traum (accompanying an uncredited Bob Dylan) singing Dylan's anti-fall out shelter song, "Let Me Die In My Footsteps" (listed here as "I Will Not Go Down Under the Ground", a different performance from the one released on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3).
The real gem here is Bob Dylan (as Blind Boy Grunt) singing "Only a Hobo" (a different performance from the one released on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3) and the anti-KKK song, "Talkin' Devil" (unique to this LP). Other tracks are: The Freedom Singers ("Ain't Gonna Let Segregation Turn Us Around"), Matt McGuinn ("Go Limp"), New World Singers ("Bizness Ain't Dead" "I Can See a New Day") and Mark Spoelstra ("The Civil Defense Sign").
This copy is in VG-/VG++ condition, cover/disc, the cover has some seam splits and edge wear, small writing to the front & back. The disc is very clean and the booklet is in fine condition.
