Here we have a 7” single-sided Berliner record featuring “Mr Bryce” singing “Kathleen Mavourneen” with piano accompaniment. The number is 2204, and it was recorded in London on the 13th of December 1898, Good Grief!
We can’t tell you a great deal about Mr Bryce. He was (according to the famous EMG Colonel) Welsh.
You can hear him on You Tube singing “Rule Britannia” with a definite Welsh accent. This disc here, of course, is a John McCormack speciality “Kathleen Mavourneen” and we bought it, wondering if “Mr Bryce” was a pseudonym for McCormack, but it definitely ain’t.
Some issues by Mr Bryce have a squiggle before his name which might be the letter “T” and there was a Tom Bryce who was a jobbing late Victorian singer. Maybe this is he.
This disc is clean and tidy, with the “dimples” in the surface that you often find in discs of this prehistoric era.
There is a grain-of-rice-size lumpy bit in the pressing near the label. This produces a “brrmp” noise for a few rotations. Both our (well adjusted) transcription turntable and our top-of-the-range acoustic player sail through this, but be aware that it is a definite bump caused by a foreign body in the shellac and may cause problems on differently adjusted gear. We would, after much discussion, rate it as just about a V-, using VJM’s vague and abstruse grading system.
It is very collectable and plays quite well for a 125 year old record.
There is piano accompaniment, but NO announced start.
