Here we have Franz Naval, (real name Franz Pogačnik) who was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, but is usually thought of as a German operatic lyric tenor.
He recorded many Slovenian songs as well as making some early Lieder recordings. He is not too difficult to find on his (often excellent) Odeon recordings, but this offering is an early rarity, made for Berliner/G&T in Vienna in October 1901. It’s mx 1367B, Ferdinand Schillings' setting of Josef Pollhammer's poem, "Im Dome meiner Seele" issue number 4210.
The title translates as “Upon My Soul” or “Bless My Soul” and is nothing to do with miners meeting seals under a dome.
It has, unusually, a printed title “label” in the wax, not hand-written. There is piano accompaniment, and.. wait for it.......
...an ANNOUNCED START...
..and we all love an announced start. This one appears to be spoken by a young person, or maybe a lady (the pianist?).
It plays very well indeed, BUT has some damage on the very edge, which makes the start VERY noisy for a second or two.
Using the VJM grading system, it’s probably a V or thereabouts, but remember the noisy start because of the discreet edge damagement situation.
