PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. After they got their feet wet in recording their first Lp, The Rounders exploded with creating bent edged acid folk that remains both way-out and charming some 47+ years later....

The Holy Modal Rounders were almost the very definition of a cult act. This isn't a case of a group that would be described by such cliches as "if only they got more exposure, they would certainly reach a much wider audience." Their audience was small because their music was too strange, idiosyncratic, and at times downright dissonant for mainstream listeners to abide. What makes the Rounders unusual in this regard is that they owed primary allegiance to the world of acoustic folk -- not one that generates many difficult, arty, and abrasive performers.
The Holy Modal Rounders were not so much a group as a changing aggregation centered around the two principals, Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber. When the pair got together in 1961, the intention was to update old-time folk music with a contemporary spirit. As Stampfel reflected: "The Rounders were the first really bent traditional band. And the first traditionally based band that was not trying to sound like an old record." They weren't the only musicians in New York thinking along these lines, and Stampfel and Weber contributed heavily to the first recordings by a similar, more rock-oriented group, the Fugs.
The Rounders were clearly accomplished musicians, and well-versed in folk traditions, they were determined to subvert with off-kilter execution and strange lyrics that could be surreal, whimsical, or just crazed. They outraged folk purists by simply changing melodies and words to suit their tastes on some of their cover versions of old standards; Stampfel once wrote in the liner notes that "I made up new words to it because it was easier than listening to the tape and writing words down."
Perhaps the most earsplittingly original duo of the entire folk revival, the Holy Modal Rounders merged the raw energies of rock, traditional American folk, and blues in a weird, whimsical manner (later dunderheadedly termed "acid folk"). The Holy Modal Rounders performed screeching yet subtle versions of old artifacts, updating tunes like "Hesitation Blues" with a countercultural reference or two (their version contains the first recorded usage of "psychedelic"). This is one of the coolest things about the Rounders with their basic approach to an old tune -- was to "hear song, forget song, try to remember song while adding your personal wrinkles, bingo!" An irreverent wit pervades the album, from "Flop Eared Mule" To "Bully Of The Town" hewing much closer to the raggedly strange, sublime Americana sounds of American underground acid-folk....

CONDITION: The cover: The THICK old cardboard cover is rated: near "EX" (excellent) the heavily applied lamination does indeed look like an old antique record (they don't make them like this anymore!) , and it is, being 49+ years of age is still very collectible having no bends, no split seams, no writing, no delete marks ... collection worthy rarity ...
The vinyl: VERY clean ...both sides retain their original gloss, "EX" (excellent) and better, so easily plays collection worthy clean ...and both old dark blue/silver Prestige labels are clean Clean
