Clifford Thornton got seriously interested in african music in 1968,he travelled to Algiers in 1969 and visited Cameroon,Nigeria,Ghana,Togo and Dahomey in 1970,he also performed in Tunisia in the same year.During a trip to the Caribbean in 1972 he focused on the evolutions of styles and interpretations of ancient West African music.The score for the “Gardens Of Harlem” was finished in 1972 but changed a bit after performing it at the JCOA work-in-progress workshops,the recording was finally made in 1974 in New York.

Very great spiritual/afro-jazz sometimes with a free-egde,cool grooves and fine soloists backed by awesome african rhythms, KILLER TRACKS ....
