This is one of 4 recordings I am listing this week by the world renowned Cellists:  Janos  Starker;  Jacqueline du Pre; Jascha Silberstein and Milos Sadlo - together with a much sought after recording by the pianist Maria Tipo..

Gradings are based on the “Record Collector Magazine's Guide” set out in the eBay Guides together with notes about condition added. Extracts from the Gramophone Magazine review written at the time of the record’s release are included, with the permission of the publishers, where these are available.

VERY GOOD +

The disc labels suggest this record has been often played and there are surface marks. They are mainly the fine hairlines, light scuffs and sleeve rubbings so often found on used records – but none look like they are damaging marks. Careful listening to both sides confirms that they are not. Whilst there are occasional light dust type ticks they are, with two exceptions, not repetitive and do not intrude on the enjoyment of listening. The exceptions both occur on side 2.

After 9 minutes, at the beginning of band 3, there are some scattered light ticks, some of which do repeat two or three times. Inspection of the record shows there are some very tiny pinprick sized marks there which are probably the cause. There is a similar short period of these sounds at both the beginning and toward the conclusion of the final band where there are, again, similar tiny marks on the surface. These sounds really are, again, very light, sound just like dust, and did not mar in any way the enjoyment of the music for me, but you should know they are there.

I have graded this record as Very Good + solely because of its surface appearance. Its sound, however, is Excellent with only minimal surface sound. In-between bands the record plays almost silently.

COVER GRADING

VERY GOOD

The cover, structurally, is entirely sound but it does show signs of handling. On the front there is soiling to the opening edge where the laminate was not applied to completely cover the card. There are also some ‘pressure’ marks to the surface bottom left, and the corners are scuffed. There is also soiling to a number of small cracks in the laminate around the edges. The back is soiled too, and there are a couple of light brown stains and, again, soiling to the unlaminated edges of the card. There is also a short 1” split on the top edge. The information of the cover, both front and back, is unaffected and the cover overall is otherwise sound.

The inner is the illustrated HMV ‘Outstanding Artists’ sleeve which is a little creased in places and slightly age discoloured but otherwise sound.
