I will be listing a number of early rock & roll records this week. This is a prop sleeve from the film Jailhouse rock. Elvis Presley/Vince Everett~ Laurel 41-623. By way of provenance, I am including a scan from a catalog which shows an autographed sleeve, but the sleeve I am offering is NOT that sleeve and my sleeve does NOT have an autograph. According to Umphred's catalog, there were perhaps 200 of these dummy sleeves made up by pasting the Vince Everett slick over existing 45 rpm EP sleeves ( in this case an appropriate Jailhouse Rock sleeve, though several of these slicks have surfaced pasted on a variety of cardboard EP sleeves unrelated to RCA VICTOR products). If you have a copy of the film Jailhouse Rock, you can fast forward to the scene where the Vince Everett character is signing stacks of record sleeves for a group of girls gathered around a table; if you pause the film at this point, you will see that there is standard type written blurbs on the backs of the few sleeves that are exposed to the camera. The front of this sleeve is VG+ with some spotting from age; the slightly worn back side is just the standard Jailhouse Rock information found on any copy of EPA4114. There never having been an actual record to match the front titles, there is no record included in this auction. On Aug-09-06 at 21:11:44 PDT, seller added the following information: I found another 1990 Elvis catalog reference to this record sleeve, so I'm adding it to this listing. "TREAT ME NICEâ€: This section, oddly enough, lists what may be the single most valuable item to be found in this book and it concerns a prop for the movie "jailhouse Rock." In a scene in the film, Elvis, playing singer Vince Everett, appears at a small record shop to autograph copies of his—Everett’s—new single, Treat Me Nice.†In the scene, Elvis can be seen signing the sleeves and handing them out to a group of young, female customers. Apparently, a small stack of picture sleeves were made up as dummies, or props, for the scene, with each of the extras who played the customers (plus other members of the cast and crew) given the sleeves as souvenirs. How many is uncertain, though a careful viewing of the film shows that there were several stacks of 50 or more used, all of which appear to be identical. Regardless, this certainly must rank as the rarest of all Elvis sleeves, although, technically, this should be considered a piece of movie memorabilia. No records are reported to have been made! The sleeve itself is a single sheet photo of Elvis with a guitar and reads “Vince Everett/Treat Me Nice/Laurel Record Co. /and Nellie was a lady.†At the top of the sleeve is Hi Fidelity†and No. 41 623.†These photos were pasted on a variety of cardboard covers. One fan who does own one of these gems, a woman who had been one of the film’s extras, has a copy with the photo pasted on to an EP cover from Imperial Records. A dealer in Texas claims to have sold a copy pasted onto a plain cardboard jacket.
