According to the legend, Karen Dalton - who has absolutely the single most expressive white female voice we've ever heard, comparing quite favorably to even Billie Holiday or Anita o'Day - - had to be tricked, coerced and cajoled into the recording studio by Fred Neil and Nick Venet in order to record her first album in 1968, and was so furious after she found out that the album was recorded unbeknownst to her, that she refused to enter the recording studio for another three years. This, her second - and last - recording session, is equally hermetic, expressive and sparse, but find her surrounded by an incredibly competent group of musicians and shows her great love of the blues; nearly 80% of the tracks are blues and R&B covers. Judging by the effort and emotional strain she invested in this album, we would not be surprised to find out that Fred Neil (who wrote the liner notes) or Dino Valente (who wrote the lead track on side 1) again had to trick her into the studio. An indispensable, critical acid/psych folk listening experience.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record has a few "dots" scattered here and there on the surface of the vinyl (these dots are a visible, but almost certainly not audible). These "dots" are usually a result of either (a) exertion of pressure on the record THROUGH the cover, or the record being stored too tightly, or (b) low-quality paper inner sleeve which lightly irritated parts of the record surface over time.

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(e)             Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 20:1.

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 2 and 4 inches / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (between 1 and 2 inches / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-         Cover has some MINOR wear along the opening slot (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No ring wear

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-         No wrinkles or creases

-         No yellowing from aging

-         No writing

-         No stamps

-         No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-         No peel-off marks

-         No stains

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.

-         No warping

-         No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-         No glue traces or wax residue.

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
