A RARE ROCKABILLY GENE VINCENT 78
B-I-BICKEY BI, BO-BO-GO
Gene Vincent's "B-I-Bickey-Bi, Bo-Bo-Go," recorded in late 1956 (and never a hit, though it was released as a single), has to count as one of the leading examples of rockabilly frivolity at its most outrageous. The song's verses are standard, if quite excellent and exuberant, rockabilly fare: a guy who hears music while walking down the street and joins in on the fun. Starting a track with a slow, drawn-out "wellll" is something of a rockabilly cliché, but a cliché is fine when it works well, and it seldom works better than it did at the start of this cut. The verse (in compulsive stop-and-go rhythm) is just a pretext, though, for the chorus, with Vincent's enthusiastic repetition of a title phrase which certainly doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense: "B-I-Bickey-Bi, Bo-Bo-Go." The way he sings it, though, he sounds as if he's delivering one of the ten commandments, especially when he reaches a fever-pitched near scream the last time he says it. That's the cue for several habitually great, near-manic Cliff Gallup guitar solos up and down the frets. What really puts the track over, though, are the near-demented screams of joy by the Blue Caps during the instrumental breaks. Prior to the Beatles, there was no band better than the Blue Caps at screaming joyously in the background, and they never whooped it up better than they did in "B-I-Bickey-Bi, Bo-Bo-Go." There's nothing profound about the song; its stature as a rockabilly classic lies in the pure onomatopoeic pleasure of their execution of the sounds and words.
