VERY RARE Gospel 78 Staple Singers FIRST RECORDING. These Are They / Faith and Grace 1953 Royal 204 & 205
This record spent many years outside of a sleeve, and it shows. Lots of surface scratches and resulting crackle and pop. The music is all there, and is still a very enjoyable listen. No greying or blaring, and any hint of distortion sounds to me like the limitations of the equipment used in recording.
The label has a tear on one side, and the run-out groove (both sides) is strange in that it leads back to the last note played. This sounds sort of like a skip, but isn't. Both sides play through with no skips or repeats. One small rim chip on These are They, not affecting play.
For those who don't know, these songs were recorded on one microphone and a two-track recorder in Roebuck "Pops" Staples' neighbor's basement with himself on guitar and vocals, along with Pervis, Cleotha and then-14 year old Mavis (who sings lead starting halfway through These Are They.) He then pressed around 500 copies and sold them at the group's performances. They are billed here as "The Staples Singers."
Faith and Grace is a Pops original, and it's filled with Country Blues guitar fills straight off of Dockery Farms, where his family had sharecropped. Since Pops had seen Charley Patton often, as well as other guitarists who entertained on the plantation, I think of this record as a bridge from the great Delta Bluesmen of the 20's and 30's all the way to the present day.
It's also Mavis' first recording. She's just as amazing here as she ever was, and still is. These Are They proves it. 'Nuff said.
