After years of grindin' it out on the road while workin' for MCA, and managing to help save the Fox along the way, the hard livin' and wild-eyed Lynyrd Skynyrd were victimized by a horrific plane crash on October 20th, 1977, that claimed the lives of Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines, and just a few month's ago keyboardist Billy Powell, Geeze if it wasn't for bad luck this band would have any luck at all.
Just three-days prior to the tragic crash landing of the Convair 240 near Macomb, Mississippi, the whiskey rock 'n' rollin' Skynyrd had released their fifth studio LP, Street Survivors and the group was prepared once more to bring their hard charged Southern fried rock to the masses with a long headlining tour. It wasn't to be as the proud Jacksonville, Florida based group was laid to rest after the fatal accident. Despite surviving members carrying on under the Skynyrd name, it was never the same without Ronnie out front, shoeless and in command of the ranks.
Like previous recordings from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Street Survivors is loaded with down home, rebel flag wavin' blues rock. Packin' on stripped down six string bending from Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, and Gaines, as well as the proud, authoritative vocals of "Simple Man" Van Zant, the eight song effort once again showcases the group in tight form.
Opening strong with the touring classic "What's Your Name", and chasin' the hot intro number with the down 'n' out "That Smell", Street Survivors cooks from the off. The original recording adds "One More Time", the catchy "I Know a Little", the straight-up "You Got That Right", the laid back "I Never Dreamed", and the closing blues number penned by new man Gaines "Ain't No Good Life".
