Description

PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question.   OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week.   Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback.   We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery.   We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! We have served thousands of satisfied customers - far more than our feedback records indicate - and our aim is to continue to do so. RARE! FINAL COLLECTION COPY - MINTY CLEAN ALL OVER!!!

Original 1970 first pressing of a lost 'psych' trio that was NEVER easy to find...it just wasn't distributed well with no promotion behind it - even though TROYKA caught the attention of a major label ...

Troyka is a band which justifies our perilous questing across North America and spooky record conventions filled with vinyl vampires. Although given a major label release (via Atlantic's then new Cotillion branch) Troyka's self-titled 1970 album remains obscure to say the least. Which is sad, because it's truly magnificent. Consisting of Mike Richards (percussion & lead vocals), Robert Edwards (guitar) and Ron "Rumor" Lukawietsky (bass) and hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, these fine Canadian gents crafted this album out of a series of jam sessions overseen by Velvet Underground producer Shel Kagan.

This kind of record building can easily result in a schizophrenic end product, each song differing too greatly to give any semblance of cohesion. Though each song is different, ranging from growling biker stomp to lysergic (LSD laced) pastorale, fortune favored the bold and the album holds together as a single solid entity. Singer Mike Richards has a "unique" voice but even if you don't warm to him, you'll still find plenty to enjoy, over half the tracks are great instrumentals.
This is a lost classic.

As noted above, TROYKA combined some frenetic post-Cream guitar thrills with gruff, hyper-macho vocals and even comes speckled with Slavic elements (two tack-on instrumentals, the lilting ‘Introduction’ and the closer ‘Troyka Finale’, bookend the record), but for the most part it relies on crotch-heavy amplification to counter the varied styles here. ‘Natural’ for instance, sports some prime virtuosic guitar work, though the vocals reek of facile sexism – as if an axe and some fine chops weren’t enough to get you laid without pubescent posturing like, “Hey mama, won’t you come down by the river, and give me some”. ‘Rolling Down the Road’, with its nearly proto-speed heaviness, fares better, channelling frantic hyper blues into an almost MC5-like abandon. Other tracks hint at a more delicate side, especially the wistful soft-psych instrumental ‘Dear Margaret (Malagosia)’, with its Spanish tinges and flecks of John Williams-ish guitar.

Troyka were often hailed for their legendary live sets – one particularly raucous set at New York’s Fillmore East saw them flagged back for a triple encore. By 1970 they seemed to be hitting their stride, scoring a coveted support slot in Toronto for the mother of all troikas, Leslie West’s Mountain. But alas, while poised to secure a page in history alongside the Band, the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin, aboard the infamous bourbon-LSD- and-barbiturate-laced 'Festival Express' cross-Canada train tour in the summer of 1970 guitarist Rob Edwards left to tend to family concerns, and thus fame turned to footnote for the mighty Troyka ...
