RARE Montana Hillbilly Country Girl Kay Autographed Photo and Four EP singles
BEFORE YOU BID – READ EVERYTHING BELOW!!!!
I didn’t attach audio. If you do a search on YouTube you will find a nice
sampling of her work.
Today I am offering an extremely rare Montana hillbilly country find –
what appears to be a Country Girl Kay 9” X 9” press photo “folder” (sleeve) with four 45 rpm EPs. The
folder is signed (in pencil) on the back.
BACKGROUND:
Item found in Albuquerque, in a box marked “sheet music,” at a local used book
store. After I found these, I immediately started to research this singer, finding
literally nothing. Digging deeper, making lots of calls, and tracking down
acquaintances, I was able to uncover the following:
Helen Evelyn (Kay) Smith Whittaker Gardner
March 7, 1923 – March 12, 2002
Kay and her sister Wanda performed throughout Missouri as The Smith Sisters.
Wanda married singer Ted Henderson (and went on to perform as
Wanda and Ted). Ted introduced Kay to Carson Jack Whittaker, a Montana
singer, who was looking for a duet partner. The two toured the country and
eventually got married, and moved back to Montana.
Carson Jack stopped performing and managed Kay, who then started going by
Country Girl Kay. The two formed a record label (Whitkay). Carson Jack died
in 1964, so I can only assume that these recordings were made before he
passed away, as Kay didn’t record afterward. Kay stayed in Montana,
remarried, and later moved to Washington, after her second husband died. She
passed away in Spokane, and is buried in Missouri.
Partial Country Girl Kay discography:
Whitkay 1000 - Arkansas Boogie
Whitkay 1001 - Life is Not a Bed of Roses
The is also a set of seven EPs (Whitkay 504-510) that I know of:
Whitkay 504 - Iowa Waltz / Mocking Bird Valley (and) Don’t Let the
Moon Break Your Heart / Blue Montana Skies
Whitkay 505 - Utah Two Step / Life is Not a Bed of Roses (and) Old
Montana
Trail / Canadian Waltz.
Whitkay 506 - ???
Whitkay 507 - Montana Rockies/Heartache Millionaire (and) I’m a
Fool / Leather Britches
Whitkay 508 - ???
Whitkay 509 - I’ll Yodel My Blues Away / Apache Trail (and) Honky
Tonk Boogie / Only One
Whitkay 510 - Raggedy Ann / Montana Special (and) Red Wing /
Crackling Hen
I have additional information I can share with the winner of these records.
AUCTION INFORMATION – READ READ READ – THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE:
NOTE: There is a reserve on this. If the reserve is not met, I will keep
these. Don’t contact me after the auction, offering to buy these!
Auction is for FOUR 45 rpm EPs (listed below). This is NOT the entire EP set mentioned
above!! Read carefully BEFORE YOU BID! What you see in the pictures is what
you get.
Photo folder is on slick semi-glossy paper. "V" pen mark on "Valtron Studios."
9” X 9” “folder”/sleeve (Song’s to Remember by Country Girl Kay) has a seam split along the
entire bottom, and a two inch split at the top (SEE PICTURE), and is slightly yellow
with age. There is some creasing and wear. Again – see picture before you bid – this is NOT perfect.
Autograph is in pencil, “Best Wishes to you From Country Girl Kay.”
High bidder will also receive these FOUR EPs. I grade each below – read before you bid.
Whitkay 504
Iowa Waltz / Mocking Bird Valley - vinyl is mint but there is slight staining on label
