Description

This is the rare single "WORDS CAN'T EXPLAIN" b/w "DON'T PRETEND" by THE
BELLES, a female vocal soul group led by Shirlie Mathews. "Official" members of
the group included Debra Dion, Rose Mary Bailey, and Patricia McElroy. Actually,
the members were reputed to be Mathews, and Patrice and Brenda Holloway, who
used aliases as Brenda was under contract to Motown. Because of her songwriting
prowess, Shirlie was asked and consented to sign with MIRWOOD RECORDS as
a staff writer, and created many of the 60s & 70s hits for Mirwood artists. She also
appeared on hundreds of records as a backup vocalist.
This is (as far as I can tell) the only single she released as THE BELLES. It is on
the MIRWOOD RECORDS label 5505, 1966. The labels are VG+, having very light
wear. The vinyl is NM, and plays and sounds great. Northern Soul Collector's item.
