Here we have the legendary tenor (and inventor of the Super Mario Moustache), Enrico Caruso. He's performing a song that he wrote the music for, together with lyricist John Focacci (inventor of Italian Bread) in an English translation by Earl Carroll (inventor of Alice In Wonderland and manager of Dagenham F.C.)
It's "Dreams Of Long Ago" which is a sweet little song, and usually it's nothing to get too excited about. However, here it is on a black-and-white advanced/test pressing which will look lovely on your shelf full of red-label HMVs.
The recording dates from 18th of April 1912, and the number is 02396. It has a raised rim, so we assume that it's an early pressing, and officialy the Mx should be C11616-3 (Thank You Robert Johannesson). The Mx of this example is clearly C11616. There WERE two earlier unissued takes, also from 1912. We don't think that this is one of them. But we could be wrong... we often are.
Conditionwise, it is clean and collectable, with some fairly unimportant storage marks, and it plays very well on our super-duper transcription deck, and magnificently on our acoustic HMV. We'd grade it as a good solid VG/VG+.
The label has a curious rubbing mark at the bottom. This is probably to cover up the info about "Not For Sale" etc.
