The preeminent metal band of the early to mid-'90s, Pantera put to rest any and all remnants of the '80s metal scene, almost single-handedly demolishing any notion that hair metal, speed metal, power metal, et al., were anything but passé. Loathe to admit it, the Texas band had in fact been one of those '80s metal bands, releasing fairly unsuccessful (and later disowned) glam-inspired music throughout much of the decade. The about-face came with the addition of vocalist Phil Anselmo, and the key turning point was the band's major-label debut, Cowboys from Hell (1990). Pantera's mainstream breakthrough came next with Vulgar Display of Power (1992), their second major-label album, which thrust the band to the forefront of the metal scene, alongside such veteran bands as Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, as well as fellow up-and-comers Sepultura and White Zombie. By the time Pantera unleashed Far Beyond Driven (1994), after two long years of touring, they were the most popular metal band in the land: the new album debuted atop the Billboard Top 200 as its lead single, "I'm Broken," was getting massive airplay.
At the height of their popularity and influence, Pantera began to self-destruct. Less than two months after the release of The Great Southern Trendkill (1996) -- an album ridden with allusions to drug abuse and personal destruction -- Anselmo overdosed on heroin after a homecoming concert in Texas, and as tensions rose between him and his fellow bandmembers, he began engaging with a growing list of side projects that kept him away from Pantera. A live album, Official Live: 101 Proof (1997), was compiled for release when it became evident that no new studio album was forthcoming any time soon. One final studio album did result, Reinventing the Steel (2000), but that was more or less it for the briefly reunited Pantera. The bandmembers once again went their sperate ways, forming such bands as Damageplan, Down, and Superjoint Ritual.
The end of Pantera then became official on December 8, 2004, when guitarist Dimebag Darrell was murdered on-stage by a deranged fan. This much-publicized murder shone the spotlight back on Pantera for an extended moment, and amid all of the emotional outpouring and tributes, a consensus arose: in retrospect, there was no greater metal band during the early to mid-'90s than Pantera, who inspired a legion of rabid fans and whose oft-termed "groove metal" style bucked all prevailing trends of the day -- from hair metal and grunge to nu-metal and rap-metal -- and remains singular to this day, as defined by the vocals of Anselmo as it is by the guitar of Dimebag. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide.
Pantera was an American heavy metal band which formed in 1981 and folded in 2003, as a result of internal conflict. The original line-up, formed while the members were still at school, was Vinnie Paul Abbott (drums) and his brother, 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott (guitar), together with Tommy Bradford (bass), Terry Glaze (guitar) and Donnie Hart (vocals).
Hart and Bradford left in 1982; Glaze took over the vocals and Rex Brown was recruited on bass. In 1983 the band released its debut, Metal Magic and followed this a year later with Projects in the Jungle. Both albums were very much in the glam-metal genre and they released another glam-inspired album in 1984, I Am the Night.
The rise of Slayer and Metallica inspired a change in sound for the band and after recruiting a new vocalist Phil Anselmo, they released Power Metal (1988). They consolidated this with a move to Atco Records and the release of Cowboys from Hell (1990). Now the band had its signature sound of thrash/groove metal, and the album was considered the first 'real' Pantera album. Vulgar Display of Power (1992) was considered to be their best album by both fans and critics, and contained the popular tracks "Fucking Hostile", "Walk" and "Mouth for War". The success of Vulgar... meant that fans were eager to purchase its follow-up, Far Beyond Driven (1994), which debuted at No.1 in the US Billboard charts.
Fame began to have its effect on the inter-personal relations within the band. Anselmo began to distance himself from the rest of the band and spent some time in the mid 90s working with the supergroup Down. For the next Pantera release, The Great Southern Trendkill (1996), Anselmo recorded the vocals separately from the rest of the band. Later that year he overdosed on heroin and the nature of his addiction was made clear to the rest of the band. Nonetheless the band continued while Anselmo involved himself in further side projects, including Eibon and Necrophagia, while Brown and the Abbott brothers began the Rebel Meets Rebel project.
In 2000 the band released what would be their final album, Reinventing the Steel. There was discussion about releasing a further album but nothing appeared. Anselmo was still engaged with side projects and with his return to Pantera unclear, the band split amidst much acrimony.
Within a year Dimebag was dead, shot onstage during a performance with his new band, Damageplan, dashing all hopes of a reunion.
REVIEWS;
5.0 out of 5 stars B...b...b...b...brutal, April 8, 2000 By A Customer
If you're one of those reviewers that don't like this album for some reason, I urge you to go back and listen to it a few times. It is really quite an amazing CD. I liked it a lot the first time I heard it, and now, after repeated listenings, I love it. Pantera does not falter here at all. In fact, they sound better than ever.
For starters, "Steel" contains two of Pantera's best songs ever: "We'll grind that axe for a long time" and "I'll cast a shadow." I think these songs hold their own with classics such as "5 minutes alone" and "Drag the waters." But that's just the beginning. Every song here rocks. There is not one clinker. "Uplift" kicks my a## every time. "Death rattle" actually scares me, it's so brutal. "You've got to belong to it" is ferocious. I could say the same for every track here, but you get the point. This album doesn't compromise, doesn't cop out, doesn't go soft. It'll smash your face in.
Leave it to Pantera, the hardest band on the planet, to give hard rock fans something to cheer about for once
5.0 out of 5 stars Hell yeah!, March 25, 2000 DAMMIT! Goddamn Electric is the BEST Pantera song I've heard for a LONG time! But, then there's Reinventing the Steel and Death Rattle, oh, and about 7 other crunching tracks that take Pantera back to the sound that made them one of the definitive metal bands, ever. If you look below you, you will gradually see more reviews giving full marks to this great record, than before. This is because these people will probably only be seing this record's true brilliance 5 days after they bought it. This is die hard Pantera and I love them for it. No fillers, no ballads, no real hit singles, just 10 hard-hitting tracks that heavy music needs right now. Pantera may be a number one selling band, but they stick firmly to their roots. They will not change. But, they will continue to make consistently great records that bow to no trend. True Pantera fans now this and as a result will totally love this record, which harks back to the classic vulgar display of power more than any of their other records - only, a lot more aggressive. People who were expecting this god awful 'nu' sound shouldn't be listening to Pantera.
5.0 out of 5 stars Old-school metal for the new millennium.
With this album, Pantera went back to basics and that's just how their fans wanted it. Sadly, this was their last masterpiece. Their legacy, however, will live on.
R.I.P. DIMEBAG, February 26, 2009
PANTERA, HANDS DOWN BEST BAND EVER. PERIOD.
REMEMBERING, SEEING THEM LIVE JUST BRINGS CHILLS DOWN MY SPINE.
Reinventing the Steel is the last studio album by popular groove metal band Pantera. It reached #4 on the Billboard Top 200 charts, #8 on the Top Canadian Albums chart, and #5 on the Top Internet Albums chart. The album's fifth track, "Revolution Is My Name", reached #28 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks.
Reinventing the Steel contains lyrics mostly about the band itself, as on "We'll Grind that Axe for a Long Time" (where the band members tell about how they've kept it "true" throughout the years, while many of their peers "sucked up for the fame") and "I'll Cast a Shadow" (about Pantera's influence on the genre). There are also songs about their fans, like "Goddamn Electric" and "You've Got to Belong To It." The band members dedicated Reinventing the Steel to their fans, whom they viewed as their brothers and sisters.
It's amazing how Pantera changes on each album but stay very heavy. From the oprah-vocaled melodic Cowboys to their last effort Reinventing the Steel, this band stays very true to the heavy music. I personally rank Reinventing the Steel just under Vulgar Display of Power as their best album. RTS is slower then Southern Trendkill and Far Beyond Driven but more hard-riff orientated. Songs #9 and #10 are absolutely stunning and literally cap off Pantera's quality career. Phil Anselmo's vocals are more brutal on this album as opposed to the squeeling screams that dominated Far Beyond Driven. If you want a fundamentally sound, American hard metal album - buy Reinventing the Steel and Vulgar Display of Power. You will not be disappointed.
If this message bothers you, you know just kiss my....., November 22, 2005Pantera at its very best. From Dimebag's first heavy note on Hellbound to Phil's "kiss my...." rant at the end of the album you ears are privelaged to a solid 45 minutes of metal that you just can't find from other bands. As real metal dwindles in the hands of folks like Zakk Wylde, we need acts like Pantera to come back and reinvent the music that inspired me to get into the music business in the first place. Like the old saying goes you really don't know what you have til its gone. (R.I.P. Dime) Back to the modern metal masterpiece in question, this album packs everything that a true Pantera fan loves about Pantera. Raw agression, Killer guitar riffs, lyrics from hell, intense drumming, and easily Rex Brown's best bass work. Similar to The Great Southern Trendkill the guys took a heavier approach to this one. I can see why some of the older fans might not have the best things to say about this album, but I say this is easily the best metal album to come out this decade. Goddamn Electric ranks up with Domination and Floods as the best Pantera work I've ever heard. If heavy metal interests you in the least I can think of no better place to start then right here.
What is wrong with you?!, October 17, 2005 If you don't like this album, then you are not a real Pantera fan. I read someone complaining that this album is too heavy or something? WTF? Are you insane? If you want lame ass melodies and wimp music then go elsewhere. This album freaking kicks in you in head the second it begins, and doesn't let up until the last fade out. It is 100% aggression. All the songs rule and they all have fantastic riffs and vocals. No awful nu-metal crap and no ballads.
Listening to this album makes my heart skip and it makes me want to fight - which is exactly what it should do.
Pantera should be proud of 3 things:
1. Their albums got HEAVIER with each successive release. This is almost unheard of considering how many metal bands sell-out, wimp out or change styles.
2. Pantera leaves a legacy of pure metal, and this last album stands up perhaps the best work of their careers.
3. They never compromised or sold-out. Period.
Sadly, Dimebag is gone but he will always be the soul of one of the most powerful bands to ever exist. RIP Darrell
