Description
THE DURUTTI COLUMN - THE RETURN OF THE DURUTTI COLUMN - 12" LP on Factory Records, FACT 14, 1979. Sleeve in beautiful NM condition, vinyl G.
THIS RECORD IS ALREADY A RARE ITEM AS SUCH BECAUSE IT IS ONE OF THE EARLY FACTORY RELEASES AND THE FIRST PRESSING OF THE DURUTTI COLUMN'S DEBUT ALBUM...
Supposedly, record store owners at the time complained to Factory about the sandpaper sleeve damaging other records in the bins..., not really grasping the fact that this, in an anarchistic way, was the point in the first place!
...BUT THERE IS MORE TO THIS ALBUM!
IT COMES IN THE ORIGINAL SANDPAPER SLEEVE THAT WAS HAND-MADE/ASSEMBLED BY IAN CURTIS 'ASSISTED' BY THE OTHER MEMBERS OF JOY DIVISION.
THERE IS PROOF OF THIS FROM VARIOUS SOURCES, MOST NOTABLY BY DEBORAH CURTIS (IAN'S WIDOW) IN HER BOOK 'TOUCHING FROM A DISTANCE' on p. 84 (see second scan):
"Ian's quest for extra pocket money for himself was never ending. He even stooped to cleaning the rehearsal rooms as the rest of the band could afford to pay him. When Factory pressed the first Durutti Column album, Return of the Durutti Column, Tony Wilson needed someone to glue the sheets of sandpaper to the sleeves and Joy Division were drafted in. Ian did most of the job himself because the others became engrossed in the porn movie hired to alleviate the boredom and Ian needed the money for his cigarettes."
ANOTHER QUOTE ABOUT THIS ALBUM ON www.discogs.com:
"This first issue (edition of 2,000) was housed in a sleeve made of sandpaper, assembled by Ian Curtis, who needed some extra cash. The other members of Joy Division watched a porn movie while sitting in the same room as Ian. Initial copies included a flexi disc with two tracks by Martin Hannett and catalogue number FACT 14 C.
The sandpaper sleeve comes in various editions: Some with spray-painted FACT 14 in black or in white, some without spray-paint."
SO, HERE'S YOUR CHANCE TO GET THIS RARE PIECE OF FACTORY/JOY DIVISION HISTORY.
Seeing this is such a curious item I'm gonna ask a bit more for it (Normally I would have put a reserve on it, but I'm just gonna ask my reserve from the start). As you can tell by my other auctions, I don't play the ridiculously low starting price game on ebay, nor do I ask astronomically high prices for rarer pieces. I just ask roughly what I payed at the time for these records, which I think is reasonable.
PS. I rated the quality of the vinyl as G, because it has some scuffs on it. Maybe it had a close encounter with its own sleeve? Anyway, that's a fitting fate for such a subversive album! ;-)
!!! I WILL PUT UP A LOT MORE JOY DIVISION GEMS AND RARITIES FROM MY COLLECTION ON EBAY THIS WEEK... !!!
I am not a dealer, but just another music 'fan' and I am putting another part of my PUNK/NEW WAVE collection up for auction. I've looked after these records with care for years and now I think it is time for some of them to be passed on...
All packaging and postage costs (from Belgium) will be payed by the buyer. I try to keep all these extra costs as low as possible. For exact payment details, mail me after the close of the auction. I do accept paypal, but I prefer people who live in the European Union to use a normal bank transfer through my IBAN-account. Items will be shipped as soon as I receive payment confirmation.
Only serious bidders please, and why not take a look at my other auctions...? You might find something of interest to you...
Happy biddings!
Cheers,
Hajo
I COULD NOT CONTACT ONE FOLLOWER ANY MORE, BECAUSE OF EBAY'S RESTRICTIVE POLICIES! SO HERE'S TO YOU, FHIFHI... THE RECORD PLAYS JUST FINE. IT DOES NOT SKIP ANYWHERE!
Best Regards, Hajo.
