RARE PROMO COPY ESSJAY "TWINS OF EVIL" 7" RECORD 1971 NM CONDITION
A fairly radical rearrangement of Harry Robinson’s orchestral theme for the Hammer horror film Twins of Evil, Essjay’s version appeared as a one-off British single and the name is largely a disguise for Mike Batt, a man better known for composing the hits of The Wombles, a cash-in novelty group spun off from the Filmfair children’s TV series narrated by Bernard Cribbins. But maybe it shouldn’t surprise us that Batt was capable of this rather Morricone-like moment of sinister musical genius: another ex-Womble, the session musician Chris Spedding, was reputedly responsible for most of the bass playing on the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind The Bollocks LP, which puts Batt’s Wombles close to the heart of the punk revolt that was supposed to be directed at bands exactly like them: Essjay: Twins of Evil (DJM, 1971).
