Original 1972 first press ... Always been scarce small British pressing of an incredibly strong "MAN" showcase, filled to the brim with an electrified showcase in the halls of the early 70s London underground ...
Live at the Padget Rooms, Penarth ranks among the all-time greatest LIVE / CONCERT recordings...coupled by the sound of the band at the peak of its game in 1972. The recording's genesis lay in Man's contributions to the Greasy Truckers benefit album, recorded and released a little earlier in '72. Though Man was granted little more than a fan club release, little hope for anyone outside the lucky confines of the United kingdom to secure a copy. Man delivered a raw sound that seemed to spill straight out of their amps, just three songs devour the album, including a remarkable rendition of the so evocative "Daughter of the Fireplace" and a positively howling take on "Many Are Called, But Few Are Raised," a live staple that had long since outgrown its studio incarnation. "H Samuel," titled for a once-thriving chain of British jewelry stores, completes the set with further dynamic improvisation, leaving the album hovering closer to the brink of a massive stoner rock-psych/underground fusion hybrid than any other Man album ever dared to go. One needed to move astonishingly quickly to hear this remarkable treasure, however. As with the "Greasy Truckers Party" they appeared on, "Live at the Padget Rooms, Penarth" was a very limited edition that entered the British charts at # number one, and promptly disappeared completely seven days later...

- Micky Jones / guitars, vocals
- Deke Leonard / guitars, vocals

Many Are Called, But Few Get Up (10:59)
Daughter Of The Fireplace (7:59)
Side TWO:

H. Samuel (19:01)

Keep in mind MAN's performances were dedicated to free improvisations - they never played a song in the same way twice. And this especially applies to their wildest and most innovative times in the early turn of 1970.

This album's highlight is the band's perfect tight and scathing interplay - which was hard-earned due to playing uncounted gigs. Although stylistically coming from different fields the dual guitarists complement each other much in the vein of early Quicksilver Messenger Service. So it's an enjoyment to follow their guitars interacting, swirling around, evolving contrary, finding together again - always alternating between rhythm and solo work. This is the band's trademark. If you have the chance to compare with the predecessor release you will recognize the improved sound quality. The deep bass work is anything less dull - much more accentuated - great work by the sound engineers.

And it's always a special manifestation for me to follow the' driving drum playing - a solid part of the band's uniqueness ...

Side one starts with "Many Are Called, But Few Get Up" - probably the best MAN composition ever and released in studio version only a few months before. This song has a quite complex skeleton far away from plain jamming - rather tension-filled behavior holding polyphonic vocals, catchy moments, weird impressions ...  really hard to describe but a wonderful example of the best days of the London Underground early '70s. no wonder why they often opened up for Hawkwind in the early '70s - perfectly suited....

Both "Romain"  and "Daughter Of The Fireplace" are full of fire, impact guitars ringing off one another in heated tight jams that remain both thrilling and exhausting even 47 years later...
