Offering is original owner’s Imperial Records Ricky Nelson Extended Play, 45 rpm record, “Ricky Sings Spirituals”, 45 EP IMP-165, 1st Pressing (4 Songs), released February 1960. Specific descriptions are as follows:

·        JACKET / SLEEVE – CONDITION: EXCELLENT. It has retained 100% of its original rich colors with a nice glossy / sheen finish. There are no markings, stains, fading or discoloration. The cover lays flat with no curling or warping. The spine is pristine. There bottom edge has a 1” split (photo no. 21) and the top edge has a ½” seam split (photo no. 20). The back cover has retained 100% its original B&W printing and white background. There are no stains, fading, age toning, yellowing or discoloration. The original vendor, “New Rochelle House of Music” with two (2) line address is ink-stamped at the top.

·        VINYL RECORD 

·        CONDITION: EXCELLENT/NEAR MINT. Seldom played, the vinyl record’s playing surfaces are very clean and bright. The vinyl has a rich, attractive gloss. There are no hairline / non-feelable surface marks on both sides of the record. There are no feelable scratches or scruff marks. The iconic Imperial Records multi-color stars’ labels with black background are pristine with no spindle wear, stains, scratches or discolorations.

Background Notes:

Nelson's only gospel music EP, it was inspired by Elvis Presley’s devotion to gospel music. It didn't come from his own religious upbringing, which was nonexistent and may have been Ozzie Nelson's idea (Ozzie wrote one of the songs, even though he didn't practice any organized religion). The EP includes a Baker Knight tune, "Glory Train", but it was a commercial failure and an out-of-character footnote to his fifties rock & roll. According to Nelson, he wasn't trying to copy Presley by recording an EP of spiritual songs, but he understood that he "was welcomed as a cleaned-up Elvis."

William Ruhlmann of All Music said that "the songs were in the style of old-time gospel music…Nelson sang the songs with assurance, but not with the feeling that Presley put into his gospel recordings. As with Nelson's rock & roll performances, his gospel recordings were sincere imitations of music he seemed to like. Cashbox noted "He catches the gospel feeling on the fast-moving “March With The Band Of The Lord”, and “Glory Train”.  Joel Selvin called it "the strangest record of his career."

Purchased at The House of Music, New Rochelle, NY. Always stored upright, kept in dry, non-smoking homes.
