RARE Rockabilly SUN 202 Doug Poindexter "My Kind of Carrying" Acetate Pair HEAR

Offered are a pair of Sun Records acetates capturing recordings for Sun Records 202. This was the only release by Doug Poindexter and the Starlite Wranglers, recorded in a session at Sun on May 1954. Tracks are "Now She Cares No More" (matrix U-110) and "My Kind of Carrying On" (matrix U-111).

Doug Poindexter & the Starlite Wranglers were only the fifth or sixth white act ever signed to Sun Records. The Starlite Wranglers circa 1953-1954 consisted of Bill Black on standup bass, Tommy Sealey on fiddle, Millard Yeow playing steel guitar, Clyde Rush on acoustic guitar, and Scotty Moore on electric guitar, with Poindexter providing the nasal, traditional, country-style singing and strumming a guitar as well. Moore claims credit for bringing Poindexter to Sam Phillips' attention at Sun, and for organizing the session that resulted in May of 1954; he certainly shared songwriting credit on both sides of the resulting single, the very hillbilly-sounding "Now She Cares No More" and the raunchy, almost proto-rockabilly "My Kind of Carrying On." The latter pointed the way toward the sound that Moore would capture about a month later, when he and Elvis Presley got together at Sun for the first time. Presley certainly was familiar with Poindexter & the Starlite Wranglers, and had attended a number of their performances. It's also possible that Poindexter played without credit on several of Presley's Sun recordings, including "Good Rockin' Tonight," and may have helped in putting together some of the arrangements.

The first acetate has handwritten in grease pencil between the pressing holes reading "150 Doug Poindexter Both Sides Now She Cares No More Sun 202 U-110"  It should be noted that these three holes, from Sam Phillips "Presto" record lathe, arranged as such constitute the holes that form the "delta" marks on early Sun recordings. This side contains "Now She Cares For You" at 78rpm. The reverse side of this acetate which has only the circular Audiodisc marking in the center has a second version of the same song. Both sound like the same take as was released to me, but I cannot be sure of that.

The second acetate has pressing holes and handwritten grease pen markings which read "Doug Poindexter My Kind of Love (sic)" both sides Sun 202 U-111. It also has a piece of tape where "46A" is written in pen. The tape and its notations could very well be from a later period, but they have been on there for some time, most likely several decades, at least. The tape is affixed between the center hole and top of the three pressing holes. " The second side of this acetate, which has a running time of 2:09 and is marked only with the Audiodisc circular engraving, contains a second version of the same song "My Kind of Carrying On" - sounds to be the same version as the other side.

The offered acetates, were acquired from the collection of Steve LaVere. LaVere is a somewhat controversial and somewhat legendary figure in the history of American blues music. He was involved in some of the early efforts in the 1960s by the Imperial label to gather historical blues compilations, and he was a key figure in helping the family of blues legend Robert Johnson establish claim to his publishing rights?a process steeped in public and professional contention, to say the least. Along the way, Steve also amassed a large collection of rare and obscure blues and rock and roll records. These Sun production acetates were purchased from his collection.

Each acetate plays clearly with the typical pops and crackles one might expect in an acetate of this age. Both of these amazing Sun acetates measure 12 inches (30.48 cm) in diameter.
