Description

From our personal collection, here is the first US BEATLES vinyl LP, obtained by us in 1964 and in our possession ever since.

  • This is one the first 80,000 copies of the early 1964 release by VeeJay Records. It contains the songs later removed for subsequent pressings - Love Me Do and PS I Love You. It also has the oval VeeJay logo on the center labels. The dead wax area has the matrix number 63-3402, the MR in a circle, and Delta-5702 (it has a real delta sign, not in writing like this). Also, importantly, is a faintly scratched-in date: 6-29-63, presumably the pressing date. This album was supposed to issue on 7-22-63, but was delayed due to internal VeeJay issues. Then when it was learned that Capital was releasing Meet the Beatles in January 1964, VJ released this 10 days earlier. Also importantly, due to a lawsuit over publishing rights to Love Me Do and PS I Love You, future pressings eliminated these two songs. A total of 1.3 million of the revised play lists were sold in 1964, and then sales ended when a licensing agreement ended with Capital Records. A printout of all this will be included with the packaging when this ships.
The vinyl is VG+ and the cover is VG, it has the owner's name blacked out and also on the white sticker at the top right. The cover has a small split at the top right corner. The back cover has a stamped "MERCO" to the right of the song list. The inner sleeve has the name of the album written on it on both sides, along with tape, and split sides - it is original.
