Description
A typed, single-side notice signed "Richard Wright" alerting ship authorities to the loss of phonograph records and cigarettes and directing their delivery, if found, to Richard Wright c/o Gertrude Stein, ca. 1946. 5 1/4" x 8" plain paper, approx. 22 lines, typed, signed.
We're auctioning a rare piece of ephemera. Richard Wright and Gertrude Stein struck up a correspondence in 1945 and in 1946 Wright was invited to Paris as a guest of the French government. En route to Paris in May, via the S.S. Brazil, Wright lost track of 6 phonograph records and 8 cartons of Camel cigarettes. This note lays claim to the property and directs the ship's authorities to make delivery, if located, to Wright chez Stein during his months-long stay in the city. Wright's time with Stein was brief, the latter died in July of 1946; Wright returned to America in December. A bright piece, strongly signed in black ink, with mild soiling to the foot of the page (away from the signature) and a pencil note regarding date/place of the note in an unknown hand. From a private collection, purchased in the 1997 auction of African-Americana at Swann Galleries.

Shipping Policies
For the US, we usually prefer to ship everything USPS priority mail or first class with a delivery confirmation number. Priority mail offers average 2-3 days delivery of shipment. Other methods of shipping are available upon request. Postcards, photos, and flat items will be shipped priority mail for best service. We will ship worldwide. PLEASE NOTE:international buyers please be aware of currency exchanges and we will assess shipping rates accordingly. If there are specific exporting problems involving the item that you won, let us know about this ahead of time please. For international buyers any additional costs, such as tax or duties will be incurred by the customer.
