DESCRIPTION:
Gorgeous 1st issue copy of an overlooked classic by the great jazz bassist Charles Mingus. This is a very early 1960 stereo pressing with the original "6 eyes" labels, not one of the subsequent reissues. Cool cover photo of Mingus dressed as a Chinese emperor, and the liner notes are by Mingus himself.

COVER:
Excellent with only very minor wear and no bends, warps, stains, marks, writing, tears or significant defects of any kind. Back is still snow white and spine (pictured) is bright yellow. Top and bottom seams (pictured) are solid with only light wear and no splits. Original price tag (pictured) from Dayton's Department Store in Minneapolis on front.

DISC:
Near mint with no wear, dirt, scuffs, spots, fingerprints or chips. Two very faint and inaudible lines on Side 1 only. Plays perfectly flat and centered, with mirror-like surface in dead-wax and full original gloss in the grooves. Plays very quiet with great TRUE STEREO sound and almost NO surface noise. The sound could probably be even better with a good machine cleaning, but we leave that to the discretion of the buyer.

LABELS:
Near mint original "6-eye" labels with no wear, tears, writing, stickers, or fingerprints. A couple very faint and tiny spindle marks near the hole on each side. DEEP GROOVE labels are clean with perfect and complete print.

INNER SLEEVE:
Original Columbia "Stereo Fidelity" inner bag (pictured) is in great shape with only minor wrinkles and no tears.

REVIEWS:
...an excellent album -- in fact, it's a testament to just how high a level Mingus was working on that an album of this caliber could have gotten lost in the shuffle. There's a definite soundtrack quality to a great deal of the music here, and indeed the majority of Mingus' originals here were composed for film and television scores and an expanded, nine- to ten-piece group. On some pieces, Mingus refines and reworks territory he'd previously hit upon. "Slop," for example, is another gospel-inflected 6/8 stormer, composed for a TV production that requested a piece similar to "Better Get It in Your Soul." The ferocious "Gunslinging Bird" follows a similar pattern, and it's the same piece whose full title -- "If Charlie Parker Were a Gunslinger, There'd Be a Whole Lot of Dead Copycats" -- is given elsewhere. There are a couple of numbers from the Ellington songbook that both feature cellos -- "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" and a fantastic, eight-minute "Mood Indigo" -- and a couple of pieces that rely on the even more tightly orchestrated approach of Mingus' pre-Pithecanthropus Erectus days -- "Far Wells, Mill Valley" and the atonal but surprisingly tender and melodic "Diane." - All Music Guide
