Rare vinyl pressing of Abandoned - Killed By Faith on the Savage Beat Label (private pressing ?) from 1985 California. Maybe this one is not for the "purist" metal fan. It's crossover hardcore snarling punk / metal. This is as nice a copy as you will find unless you come across a sealed one. There are 2 small stickers on the shrink wrap & the vinyl is visually Near Mint. Below are links to hear most of the tunes as well as information & reviews I found on the internet. Abandoned-Killed by Faith LP (Savage Beat, 1985)

Rare LP by post-Adolescents outfit. NM/NM condition

A band formed by ex members of Modern Industry, who'd also play in the Flower Leperds. Whilst they were gathering these songs they asked Tony Cadena/Montana/Reflex etc (Adolescents) to write lyrics for the band. Their singer, Mark Marshall, left so Tony stepped in to sing and record this album; the only release from that period.

Anthony Brand (born February 24, 1963) is also known by the stage names Tony Cadena, Tony Montana, Tony Adolescent, and Tony Reflex. Released in 1985 on Savage Beat. I found this by pure chance as I'd no idea it was out, or even that it had been recorded. During one of my mammoth Volume records/Virgin record searches I saw this and flipping it around the record label caught my eye, and then Tony's name. I hadn't heard it, but based on Tony's name alone I bought it. Luckily I like a bit of metal as this is exactly what it is, a classy piece of punk/metal cross over.

Yeah, f*ckin sh!t yeah. This album rules hard. However let me just digress for a moment to say that this not a metal album – not by any means. I’ll keep things short, but seriously dude, this is hardcore punk rock, and totally badass hardcore punk rock as well – the real stuff – from the ‘80s – before every band started trying to sound all tough guy, or all metal core like Converge Back in the ‘80s US hardcore had its own feel – a cool, genuine, bratty, and aggressive, yet arguably melodic feel, perhaps best typified by bands like Adolescents, whom this band shares staff members with, & sounds pretty much exactly like – which is just awesome! Anyway, why people refer to this as a metal album is beyond me – it sounds like the natural continuation of the Adolescents in the mid-‘80s, and sounds as through-and-through punk rock as they ever did.

Anyway, back to the review proper – killer album. I love this record – maybe not quite as much as I love the Adolescents debut, but it’s probably just as good; musically more talent is on display, and it is perhaps recorded better too. Much like the blue album though – it is just an onslaught of stripling attitude, nasty snarling assaulting punk rock – short song assaults from start to finish, without relenting for a f*cking millisecond. Danse Of Death might typify this best – a snarling high speed cut, that takes time to offer some seriously headbanging, heavy riffs before erupting into another verse of shouted, authoritative, yet sarcastic commands by Tony, over high paced, caustic lightning guitars. Thrilling stuff. Most songs are in the 2-3 minute mark, high to medium pace, offering lots of dirty sounding punk guitar tone, with an almost Motorhead-ish speed metal quality to them.

Black Widow is such a memorable track, though perhaps no better than any of the other sterling tracks on the album. The inherent style and attitude present in Tony’s vocals (which just utterly reminds me of Adolescents with every line), and the nasty, negative vocals are just great. Better actual music (guitars) is on display in just about every song though – and what really shines through on this album is the awesome bass riffs & skill on display right throughout – even when compared to heavy metal records of the same period. Bass is very prominent, and does far from merely shadow the guitars – it’s always active, always creative, coming through with neat little scales which add to the flavour, and pacey energy of much of the material – not to mention gaining the punk rockers a few skill-level kudos in the process. The same could never be said when comparing the guitar solos to metal records, and this record is no exception. Watch for awesome guitars (bass especially) in Screaming Through, the nasty Stillborn and many others. Perhaps most especially First Offering.

This album is highly recommended to… pretty much everyone really. Abandoned combines the nasty, rough flavour of classic Californian hardcore punk (OC/West LA style especially), with the energy and pace and metallic tinges of ‘80s crossover a la D.R.I. and a pinch of the sleazy, Motorhead worshipping speed metallisms of the legendary Beowulf ( Venice). If you like ‘80s hardcore – you’ll like this – no question. If you like ‘80s crossover you should like this, and if you love Adolescents - you’ll LOVE this record. Seriously mindblowingly good. Seems almost impossible to hate, but I’m sure there’s a few of you so-called metal purist types out there that just won’t get this awesome record. For all others – this one is recommended, snarling punk rock.
