Description

When Theodore Roosevelt lost the Republican nomination to Taft prior to the election of 1912, he formed a third party, the Progressive Party, (nicknamed the Bull Moose Party). When votes were counted, Wilson won with 435 electoral votes and Roosevelt only garnered 88 electoral votes. After big losses in the election of 1914, the Progressive Party faded away. Nevertheless, Roosevelt recorded a famous speech for Edison in August, 1912 A PROGRESSIVE COVENANT WITH THE PEOPLE. This was in addition to three other Roosevelt speeches, all released on 4 minute wax cylinders in November 1912. These were included in the last releases of the Edison 4 minute wax cylinders. Three of his speeches were later released on Blue Amberol in April, 1919 on the occasion of Roosevelt's death but cylinder #1146 was never recorded on Blue Amberol since the party had faded into obscurity and the content was moot.

Most collectors of Edison 4 minute wax cylinders have placed a high priority on cylinder # 473, E.H. Shackleton's MY SOUTH POLAR EXPEDITION, which was released in April, 1910. Occasionally, this cylinder will appear on Ebay and command an appropriate high price. The Roosevelt cylinder is seldom seen and would be the treasure of any cylinder collection.
