Description
He was the composer of dozens of long-rnnnng shows (Okalahoma!, Carousel, Pal Joey, etc.) and lasting entriies in the American popular songbook with his partners Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein. She was the fresh-faced English sensation whose debut as Eliza Doolittle in the gigantic Broadway hit, My Fair Lady, had drawn raves from cynical critics and had delighted thousands of theatergoers since its opening early in 1956. Now television audiences all across America were getting an opportunity to see and hear the Broadway sensation , Julie Andrews, in a brand-new musical written especially for her and , surprisingly, not for the Broadway stage but for that relative rarity in 1957, color television.
Eminently proud of the forthcoming production -- and without foreknowledge that "Cinderella" would endure through countless video and stage versions, right up to the Tony-award-winning production on Broadway right now (starring Carly Rae Jepsen)--CBS Television gave TV columnists and "insiders" a taste of what was to come in a limited-edition "sampler" of musical selections from the show. A ten-inch 33rpm record, PREVIEW, showed off Julie Andrews' glorious voice with just the barest accompaniment, a piano. But at the keyboard: composer Richard Rodgers himself! (Unlike Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and others, Rodgers seldom allowed his pianistic abilities to be saved for posterity.).
As you can read on the simple paper jacket, "This is a recorded preview, made in a limited edition for private use only, of six of the songs...is not for sale, cannot be used for broadcast purposes, and is n every sense of the word a collector's item." Here's the way Julie Andrews first performed In My Own Little Corner, Ten Minutes Ago, Do I Love You (Because You';re Beautiful), and three other numbers before the March 31, 1957 telecast.
