Description
Some Recent English Poetry

with a commentary by the compiler

This is a set of 5 78rpm 12" Gramophone Records enclosed within a paper folder
The whole set has been produced and prepared by
The Writers Group
within The Society for Cultural Relations with the USSR (SCR)(now called The Society for Co-operation in Russian & Soviet Studies SCRSS)
and published in 1946
The SCR was formed by Leftist intellectuals and through the 1930's and 40's had a number of specialist groups, including a Writers Group. Its membership included some of the best known authors of the day,and they developed strong links with Soviet Authors.
In late 1946, as a cross cultural initiative the SCR recorded several British poets reading some of their new works. This was presented to the Soviet Ambassador who forwarded it to Moscow to hold it at VOKS, the Soviet International cultural co-operation body.
The poet-readers included T S Eliot, Edith Sitwell, Cecil Day Lewis,Stephen Spender, and Louis MacNeice.
The SCRSS has copies of this set but I have no knowledge of any other copies apart from this one
The discs are of varied condition visually,
side 1 Record 1 has been subject to some sort of solvent BUT it still plays with a little background noise
Side 2 Record 1 is fairly clean
Record 2 is in better visual condition on both sides has a little age related marking, plays well
Record 3 looks clean but with age related mottling and plays well
Record 4 looks very clean with just slight age related marking
Record 5 is one sided and again has been cleaned with a solvent BUT also plays quite well with only slight loss of sound quality as some background noise.
All of the sides play at least quite well,
The Folder is basically 5 thin cardboard 12" cellophane lined sleeve enclosed with a thin cardboard folder all tied together with red string
This is an extremely RARE and possibly culturally important artifact so I have put a small reserve on the lot
