Artista era o grande sucesso no mundo na época e foi trazido ao Brasil pela TV Excelsior. Acervo/Estadão

Ray Charles veio ao Brasil pela primeira vez em um dos melhores momentos de sua carreira, às vésperas de completar 33 anos. O cantor norte-americano fez dois shows em São Paulo, no Teatro Cultura Artística, na extinta TV Excelsior, na rua Nestor Pestana, no dia 19 de setembro de 1963.

Entrevista. Cegueira e racismo foram temas proibidos pelo astro na entrevista coletiva concedida aos jornalistas antes do show em São Paulo. Mesmo assim, Charles revelou ter recebido a oferta de 12 mil brasileiros que queriam doar-lhe os olhos. "Nasci para sofrer e sofrer muito, não mereço esta felicidade tão grande, a de poder ver", declarou o astro.
