It is nothing short of totally absurd that Ray Charles had to wait 15 years into his career to receive his first real, comprehensive anthology (Atlantic's "The story of...” covered only the seven years the Genius spent with the label). Not only was Ray Charles the progenitor of Soul music, he was the father of the entire attitude, class and style which was emulated by hundreds, if not thousands, of others. Not to mention that he was the biggest-seller for both Atlantic and ABC labels. Whatever the reason for this abomination, the 2-LP set I have here represents not only the first comprehensive anthology Ray was ever granted, but - for my money - still the best. It would not be before 1975 that Ray would receive another career-spanning anthology. The only other Ray Charles compilation that can compete with this one is the phenomenal 1996 five-CD Rhino Records box set, but I think the anthology I have here is much more concise, condensed and (more importantly) less expensive (not to mention: a vinyl, analogue pressing). The album is printed on a hard-cardboard and made to look like a hard-bound book with the "bronze medal" of Ray Charles in the middle, and includes the hefty 12-page insert covering the entire span of Ray's career plus the entire discography up to 1966. This is the only LP in existence where you can find his mega-rare 1966 "Tangerine" single "I don't need no doctor (later covered by Humble Pie and many other bands) c/w I chose to sing the blues". The songs are: I can't stop loving you - What'd I say - Ol' man river - One mint julep - Crying time - Makin' whoopee - Busted - Takes two to tango - Ruby - Let's go get stoned - Cry - Unchain my heart - Georgia in my mind - Baby it's cold outside - Worried Mind - I chose to sing the blues - I don't need no doctor - Born to lose - Hit the road, Jack - You are my sunshine - From the Heart - Teardrops from my eyes - No use crying - Chitlins with candied yams

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). For more details, see: "Critics Choice: Top-200 albums" compiled by Paul Gambaccini, Omnibus Press, Library of Congress Catalog No.7855565 (or ► click here for the complete album listing)

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID)

(b)            The records are believed to come in their original stock inner sleeves.

(c)             The album is believed to come with its original 12-page insert intact.

(d)            The records are apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)             Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
