When Ray Charles switched from Atlantic records to ABC-Paramount in the summer of 1961, he was instantly accorded a star treatment at his new home. This was almost instantly reflected in the lavish, rich production, and quality of the recordings (technically speaking); alas, not all of his ABC recordings were as inspired as his earlier Atlantic masterpieces. The result: brother Ray's recordings for the ABC-Paramount sound noticeably better than his Atlantic albums and singles. For starters, each and every song Ray Charles recorded for ABC was recorded in 4-track stereo, unlike Atlantic, which released certain tracks - and albums - only in mono. In other words, at ABC, Ray Charles was treated as a POP, and not as an R&B star.

Notwithstanding the material he recorded for ABC-Paramount (most, but not all of which is top-notch), the sound quality of these recordings is truly exceptional. Lately, Ray Charles' early 1960's recordings for ABC-Paramount have developed somewhat of an audiophile cult followership; some of the albums, such as his duet album with Betty Carter;  this, his 1962 masterpiece, "Modern sounds in Country and Western",  and two accompanying volumes "Modern Sounds…Vol.2" and "Rhythm & Blues meets Country & Western" are now generally recognized as masterpieces of early analog stereo recording and mastering with the fine, balanced stereo and pure, crystalline sound (Three of these have been issued on DCC Compact Classics as gold, audiophile compact discs within the past few years). Less known fact is that the other Ray Charles albums from this same period sound just as great. We have a pleasure of presenting here one of those fine audio wonders, Ray Charles' 1962 album in a mouthwatering, beautiful  condition: If ever there was a classic of the American music of the XX century, you are looking at it.

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant);  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
